Decorative Astrolabe İ.
HE.
The astrolabe, which is thought to have been invented by Hipparchus in the 2nd century, is an astronomical and nautical instrument used to determine the position of celestial bodies at any time of the year, at any latitude.
It is known that various works were written about astrolabe as a result of the importance given to science and culture by the Abbasid caliphs at the great university in Harran in the ninth century. In the 10th century, it spread from Arab-dominated Spain to Europe and its use became widespread.
The astrolabe has been used to solve time-related problems, especially by making it possible to observe the stars at night and track the movements of the Sun during the day.
Although there are different types of astrolabe such as spherical and linear, the most widely used astrolabe in the Islamic world is the plane (planispheric) astrolabe, which consists of a flat circular disc.
The main body is a circular disc, and there is a chair on the top of which the ring for hanging the astrolabe passes. The patterns on the decorative astrolabe include meridian and parallel circles and terms related to astronomy.
The decorative astrolabe was inspired by a brass astrolabe found in the Museum of Islamic Art, and all the relief patterns on it were handcrafted using 24-carat gold and antiquated paints.
