Göbeklitepe Archaeological Site is located 18 kilometers northeast of Şanlıurfa city center, near Örencik Village.
The site was discovered in 1963 during a survey carried out in partnership with the Universities of Istanbul and Chicago, and the real value of the area began to emerge with the excavations started after 1994.
After these studies, it was understood that Göbeklitepe was a cult center dating back 12000 years.
It has been understood that Göbeklitepe is a unique sanctuary for the Neolithic period with its location, dimensions, dating and monumentality of its structures. Since it has remained untouched in its natural environment for 12000 years, important archaeological finds of the period emerge.
There is a common feature in the way these temples from the Stone Age were built.
Two T-shaped columns are located opposite each other in the center of these temples, which are surrounded by T-shaped columns.
Due to the hand and arm depictions seen on the T-shaped columns, the columns are thought to be stylized human forms.
There are embroidered animal reliefs and abstract symbols on the columns. Göbeklitepe Archaeological Site, which was included in the World Heritage Tentative List by UNESCO in 2011, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2018.
